Missionary of Hope
Part II

Batam, August 20 – 21, 2025 — Second Chance Foundation (SCF) together with Church of Divine Mercy (CDM) Singapore once again continue their commitment to provide a second chance for inmates and juvenile residents through the Missionary of Hope program. This program, held at Batam Class IIB Women’s Prison and Batam Class II Juvenile Detention Center (LPKA), serves as concrete proof that rehabilitation is not only about discipline, but also about skill empowerment, character strengthening, and spiritual recovery.

Continuing the spirit from the First Program

The Collaboration between SCF and CDM began in November 2024, with the inaugural activity held in May 2025. The program received positive responses from both participants and UPT management, which encourages the continuation of the program in Batam this August. This activity not only repeated the previous training but also strengthened the mentoring aspect so that the skills training provided can truly become provisions for their independence after release.

83 Participants, One Spirit to Change

This activity was attended by 83 participants consisting of 43 female inmates and 40 juvenile residents. Over two days, they were divided into carious training classes, including:

  • Sewing Training: Improving technical skills and producing simple functional products.

  • Computer Training: Introducing basic digital literacy so participants are ore prepared to face today’s technology-driven world.

  • English Training: Building confidence to communicate with practical vocabulary for day-to-day life.

  • Self Development & Motivation: Developing self-confidence, discipline, teamwork, and the spirit to never give up on any circumstances.

Through this series of activities, participants not only gained technical skills, but also moral and mental encouragement to rebuild their lives.

A Touching Reflective Moment

One of the most memorable sessions was “Burning the Papers of Disappointment”, where participants wrote down regrets, wounds, and burdens of the past that they had long carried. Consciously, those papers were then burned as a symbol of release, opening the way to start a new chapter. A heartfelt and relieved atmosphere was felt as participants watched the papers turns into ashes, a reminder that the future can always be restored.

In addition, juvenile residents also took part in virtue & character building sessions packaged through interactive methods. The goal was to instill values of kindness, honesty, and optimism, while strengthening their mental resilience so that they are ready to return to society.

Cross-Country Collaboration for Real Change

The event was also attended by the Head pf Batam Women’s Prions, the SCF Team, and the CDM Singapore team. The presence of international partners shows that the rehabilitation program of inmates is not only a local responsibility, but a humanitarian movement that can unite many parties. This cross-country support provides added value, not only in material form but also in spiritual and motivational guidance.

Achievement and Future Hopes

From the evaluation results, the majority of participants stated that they felt more confident, optimistic, and motivated after participating in this program. Missionary of Hope also received appreciation from Batam Women’s Prison and LPKA, as it has been proven to support the existing rehabilitation programs within the UPT.

Second Chance Foundation believes that activities like this are an ideal model of integrative rehabilitation: combining technical skills, character strengthening, and spirituality. The hope is that this activity will not stop in Batam but also be expanded to other regions in Indonesia.

More than just a training, Missionary of Hope is a shared journey to prove that everyone deserves a second chance. With the spirit of collaboration, SCF will continue to present programs that bring hope, opportunities, and new paths towards a better future.
