Building the Creativity of Foster Children Through Pottery Classes at Juvenile Correctional Facility Class II Bandung

Bandung - In commemoration of National Children's Day 2025, the Second Chance Foundation, in collaboration with Lost In Clay, held a Pottery Class at the Juvenile Correctional Facility Class II in Bandung. This activity is concrete evidence of SCF's commitment to supporting the development of juvenile through an arts-based approach, creativity, and empowerment.

Pottery as a Medium of Education & Therapy

Pottery Class is not just a form of entertainment; it is designed to provide educational and therapeutic value. Through ceramic art, the juvenile are encouraged to express themselves, practice patience, hone fine motor skills, and build self-confidence. The handbuilding and wheel-throwing techniques introduced enable participants to create functional works of art such as cups, bowls, or small plates. This process also opens up insights into the economic value of their work. Furthermore, their creations will be fired by the Lost in Clay team, ensuring they achieve food-grade quality and market value.

The Class and Partner Support

The event was opened by Mr. Kusnali, Head of the West Java Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections, with remarks from Ms. Evy Amir Syamsudin, Chair of the Second Chance Foundation. On the same occasion, SCF also donated books from the Gramedia Popular Library (KPG) to enrich the knowledge and reading interests of the juvenile in its care.

The class activities are divided into three main sessions:

  1. Handbuilding – Shaping clay into functional pieces.

  2. Wheel Throwing – Creating clay works using a spinning wheel.

  3. Pottery Painting – Decorating works of art using creative coloring techniques.

A total of 30 juvenile actively participated, with full support from the Lost in Clay facilitator team and the SCF team. At the end of the activity, participants received certificates and gifts as a token of appreciation.

Positive Impact and Sustainability of the Program

Through these creative activities, the juvinele in our care not only gain new skills but also the opportunity to discover their potential and build hope for a better future. SCF believes that every child, without exception, has the right to develop, learn, and be given a second chance. The collaboration between SCF, Lost in Clay, and LPKA Bandung is a concrete step towards realizing this mission.
