Entrepreneurship Training: Empowering Inmates Through Creativity and Skills
Second Chance Foundation (SCF), in collaboration with Yayasan Indonesia Setara, once again organized an entrepreneurship training program from September 30 to October 2, 2025. This three-day program was held at Tangerang Class IIA Women's Correctional Facility, aimed at providing inmates with knowledge, skills, and inspiration to build independent and sustainable livelihoods.
Day One: Opening and Building a Positive Mindset
The training began with a symbolic opening ceremony where participants received their ID cards, officially marking the start of the program. The event was attended by SCF Chairperson, Mrs. Evy Amir Syamsudin; Chief of Gerakan Masyarakat Wirausaha (GEMAWIRA), Mrs. Diantri Lapian; and Head of the Correctional Facility, Mrs Triana Agustin. Their presence not only encouraged participants but also reinforced the shared commitment to support inmates in gaining a second chance for a better life.
The opening was followed by a hypnotherapy session designed to help participants relax, focus, and become more receptive to positive change. Many participants expressed how the session boosted their confidence and encouraged them to embrace personal growth. The day continued with mindset-strengthening workshops emphasizing optimism, discipline, and resilience. Through discussions and interactive reflections, participants were given space to share their aspirations and commit themselves to making the most of the program.
Day Two: Hands-on Practice – Creating Body Butter
On the second day, participants engaged in a practical workshop where they learned to make body butter, a natural skincare product with high market potential. Under the guidance of facilitators, participants were taught step by step—from preparing raw materials, to blending and packaging the final product.
The session was not only about learning production techniques but also about understanding the importance of hygiene, precision, and creativity in developing quality products. For many participants, this was their first time working with skincare formulations, sparking excitement and curiosity. The activity also emphasized teamwork, with participants collaborating in groups, sharing tasks, and ensuring consistency in the final results.
The highlight of the day was when participants proudly tested and presented the body butter they had made themselves. Beyond the technical skills, the session opened their minds to the potential of personal care products as a promising business opportunity after reintegration into society.
Day Three: Business Strategy and Identity Building
The final day of training shifted focus toward managerial and entrepreneurial skills. Participants explored how to build a strong business identity, including choosing an effective business name, designing a brand logo, and creating a marketable brand image. The facilitators also introduced financial literacy topics such as bookkeeping and proper cash flow management, highlighting the importance of separating personal and business finances.
Additionally, participants were trained in the basics of digital marketing—learning how to use social media platforms and online tools to promote their products cost-effectively to wider audiences. The enthusiasm was evident as participants brainstormed creative ideas to market their handmade products, particularly the body butter they had produced the day before.
The program concluded with participants presenting their groups business plans to the facilitators. This final session encouraged them to think critically, express their creativity, and build confidence in communicating their ideas. The lively presentations became a source of inspiration for both the participants and the facilitators, symbolizing a fresh start and a stronger determination to pursue entrepreneurship.
A Step Toward New Opportunities
This entrepreneurship training program reaffirmed the commitment of SCF and its partners—Yayasan Indonesia Setara, MRUF, and Kadin—to empower inmates with practical skills and business knowledge. By combining mindset development, technical training, and business strategies, the program provided a holistic learning experience tailored to the real challenges participants may face after release.
The introduction of body butter production not only added variety to the training but also demonstrated that entrepreneurship can grow in many directions, from food products to personal care industries. More importantly, the training instilled confidence, teamwork, and a sense of purpose in the participants—reminding them that a brighter future is possible with the right mindset and skills.
With the spirit of second chances, SCF continues to believe that empowerment and opportunity can transform lives, helping inmates reintegrate into society as independent and productive individuals.
